China's electricity generation capacity is set to hit 2 billion kilowatts by 2020 to meet growing demand, and the country will also upgrade its electricity structure and distribution network to cut carbon emissions, the National Development and Reform Commission said.

Nearly 500 million KW are to be added in the next five years to the 1.53 billion KW at the end of 2015, as "the nation's electricity consumption would grow 3.6-4.8 percent annually to 680-720 million kilowatt-hours by 2020," the NDRC said in the 13th Five-year (2016-2020) Plan for electricity, which was unveiled on 22 Dec., 2016.
